Brent L. Top was on the faculty of the BYU Jerusalem Center 1993-94, teaching Old and New Testament and an elective class on the Writings of Isaiah. Arguably the greatest teaching experience of his professional life, Professor Top said that the Holy Land–its history, people and spirit– became part of his very soul. Likewise, Brent’s wife, Wendy and their four children all had life-changing experiences and developed life-long friends while living in Jerusalem. Dr. Top joined the BYU Religious Education faculty in 1987 and has taught most all of the religion course offerings. As associate dean from 1997-2002, he was given the responsibility to help recruit and train prospective religion faculty for the Center and served on other committees and councils that promoted BYU’s work at the Jerusalem Center. He served as the chair of the Department of Church History and Doctrine from 2009-2013 and as Dean of Religious Education from 2013-2018. His love for the Holy Land continues to this day, daily reading news from the region, attending conferences and events in Israel and leading tours to the Holy Land almost every year. Because of his deep love for the land and the many friends he has there, the phrase “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem” is profoundly personal for Brent and his family.
