Dr. Kerry Muhlestein: Covenant, Connection, and the Promised Land

Many of us have felt a connection to the Holy Land that we can’t fully explain. As we learn more about the connecting power of covenants, we may come to better understand this feeling. However, it should not stop there. Our deepening identities as covenant keepers and our connection to the land should also help us connect more and more with our covenant family, past and present. This can help make the scriptures become even more powerful for us. Increasing our covenant consciousness can help make our past experience in the Holy Land continue to yield spiritual blessings to us even as we live in a different Promised Land.

Dr. Jenet Erickson: Thirty Years Later, Returning Once Again: Why the Jerusalem Center Experience Only Grows in Power and Meaning Over Time

The experience we have as students is so profound, we may be unsure of its power to mean the same to us over time. Returning 30 years later, I found in “coming home” that its meaning had only increased. More life experience gave deeper understanding to the truths glimpsed years before: the sure reality of our covenant identity, the purpose of pain, our covenant belonging to one another, the unspeakable gift of His glorious Resurrection, and so many others.

Jim Welch: Listen to the music of Jerusalem by the entertaining and accomplished professional organist and recent service volunteer at the Jerusalem Center.

View a fascinating collection of artistic, antiquarian maps of the city of Jerusalem, along with original art by alumni. Also view a colorful and artistic ancient Jerusalem map collection that will be on display.

Healthy Holy Land-inspired refreshments will be provided. This event is open to all Jerusalem Study Abroad alumni and to the public as well.

The Jerusalem Center Alumni invites you to learn about the city of Bethlehem with former BYU Jerusalem Center professor, Brent Top (’93-’94). Kick off your Christmas season with us as we consider the events surrounding the birth of our Savior through the sites in Bethlehem and the sacred land at Shepherd’s Field. Dr. Jared Ludlow

Thursday August 11th at 7:00 pm MDT on zoom

The BYU Jerusalem Center Alumni invite you to join Dr. Jared Ludlow as he takes us through Magdala. Magdala is one of the most fascinating archaeological and religious sites to visit along the shores of the Sea of Galilee. While it was rarely visited before 2009 and usually only elicited a brief drive-by mention as being the hometown of Mary Magdalene, since the discovery of a first-century synagogue and subsequent discoveries of markets, homes, dock, and fortifications from the Jewish Revolt, it has become a must-see stop. Besides its historical significance, it has a new church dedicated to female disciples of Jesus’ day and today. We will discuss these significant discoveries and review the important religious events associated with the site and female discipleship.

Kursi, the site where Christ cast out demons into swine

to view this devotional, link here.

It was wonderful to “visit” Kursi with Dr. Judd on Thursday, August 5, 2021. If you missed this devotional, it was recorded and you can watch the event below.

This is the location of a famous but controversial miracle of the Savior. Between Capernaum (the Savior’s Galilean headquarters) and Ein Gev (where JC students stay when they are in Galilee) along the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee is a site called Kursi, which is the traditional location where the Savior cast out demons into swine which then ran into the sea.  Only some JC groups have visited Kursi so this will be brand new for some alumni.  The site of Kursi is the location of the largest Byzantine monastery ever discovered in the region of Galilee, recently excavated and partially reconstructed and now located in a National Park.  Brother Judd will provide a tour of the site as well as give insights into the strange miracle in order that we might understand it better.
