George F. Masters

1992-1993, 1997-1998

Brother George Masters was born in 1942 in Inglewood, California and raised in Burbank, California. He graduated from John Burroughs High School (1961). He attended Glendale C. C before his Mission to the Southern States (1962-1964) where he served in Georgia and South Carolina. He then went to Los Angeles Valley C. C. where he received his A. A. degree in 1967. Then he attended San Fernando Valley State College (now C-SUN) where he received his B.A.in History (1970).  He did graduate work at Northern Arizona University before going to BYU., where he received his Master’s Degree in Adult Education Administration (1979).

During junior high and high school, George was employed in a military packaging company and then in a metal spinning shop.  After his mission he returned to work at the metal spinning shop.  He also taught Early Morning Seminary and managed an apartment house. All while he was going to college full-time.George was raised by his aunt, Mary Castleton, and his maternal grandparents.  His mother was in a mental institution until just before he left on his mission.  He met his father in 1961. He married Sharon Tanner, of North Hollywood, California in 1965, and they are the parents of 7 children, who are all married. They have 28 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

George taught early morning seminary for 5 years and then 37 years as a full-time Seminary and Institute teacher.  In retirement he taught Institute for over 2 years before serving 23 month in the Canada Winnipeg Mission, where he and his wife supervised the Seminaries and Institutes for all of Manitoba and Western Ontario, Canada, as well as part of northern Minnesota.

George and Sharon first visited the Holy Land in 1982, with Gerald Lund as their LDS guide.  George returned for 18 days in 1985, and he and Sharon led a CES tour in1990 for another 18 days. In 1992, George and Sharon and five of their seven children came to the BYU Jerusalem Center to teach for three semesters. They were invited back for the Summers of 1997, 1998 and 1999. In 2007 they led a commercial tour of the Holy Land for 18 days.  In 2009 they got a call asking them to postpone a mission they had applied for, so as to take the place of a BYU professor, who could not come and fulfill his assignment. Approximately one month later they came to the Center for a semester. George and Sharon love the Jerusalem Center, the students, the faculty, the staff, the land and the people.

In February 2025, George and Sharon will celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary. George loves his wife and family. They presently serve as Ordinance Workers in the Jordan River Temple. Together, they have served three full-Time Mission (Canada Winnipeg, Canada Vancouver, and Utah Salt Lake City South) and one Stake Mission. George has also served at least 4 other Stake Missions. Their testimony is that God and Christ live. The Gospel is True. Joseph Smith is a true Prophet as is President Nelson.
