Early Life: LaMar was born October 24, 1926, in Whitney, Idaho, to Hyrum Grady and Loreeta Bodily Garrard. He had two older brothers, Willis D. and Verl G. Garrard. He spent his childhood years in Idaho, graduating from Eagle High School at the age of 16.

Life’s Work | Service | Interests: Following high school, LaMar went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho. He served during World War II in the United States Navy for two years, and later, as an officer in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He continued his education at BYU completing a master’s degree in Church history and philosophy. It was at BYU that he met his sweetheart and eternal companion, Agnes Anne Weibell. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple May 10, 1954. LaMar and Agnes are the parents of seven children.
❦ He later earned a PhD in Psychology at BYU. LaMar spent most of his adult professional life doing what he loved best, teaching with the Religion Faculty at BYU. He looked forward each day to being with his students and sharing his testimony with them. He had a deep appreciation and respect for his colleagues.
❦ LaMar has had many callings in the Church including that of bishop, counselor in the bishopric, and member of stake high councils, but his favorite calling has always been that of teaching the gospel in various capacities throughout the Church. Through his efforts in teaching temple preparation classes in both California and Utah, many people have been reactivated and enjoyed the blessings of the temple.
❦ LaMar has always been a “down-to-earth” person and a man of integrity. He would want to be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and teacher. LaMar Elwin Garrard passed away July 16, 2010, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. He was 83 years old.
