Scott C. Esplin is the Dean of Religious Education at Brigham Young University and a professor in the department of Church history and doctrine, where he specializes in the Doctrine and Covenants and twentieth century Church history. He was formerly the director of BYU’s Religious Studies Center (2018-2021). He received a BS degree in business administration from Southern Utah University (1997), followed by an MEd and PhD in educational leadership and foundations from Brigham Young University (2001, 2006), focusing his studies on the history of Church education. His current research continues to examine educational history as well as the development of Church historic sites, pilgrimage, and religious tourism. In 2018 he published an award-winning book detailing the effects of religious tourism on the modern community of Nauvoo, Illinois. He and his wife, the former Janice Garrett, live in Lindon, Utah, and are the parents of four children. The Esplin family lived at the Jerusalem Center from 2016-2017, where Brother Esplin taught religion classes on the Old and New Testaments. They loved their time in the Holy Land, especially their relationships with the students.
