Students in Winter/Spring 1994 had the unique opportunity to participate in an archeological dig at the Philistine city of Ekron. They were among the first to see Palestinian policemen in the West Bank because of the recently signed Oslo Accords, and they were also in Jerusalem at the time of the Hebron Massacre and related rioting in East Jerusalem. Because Egypt wasn’t a travel option, this group went to Jordan, visiting Amman and Petra.
Winter/Spring 1994 included a group of 16 Intensive Hebrew students, with Professor Donald Parry and teachers Janet Ward and Smadar from Hebrew University. Three of the students became BYU professors, including Monica Carter Richards (Hebrew) and Kerry Muhlestein and Dan Belnap (Ancient Scripture-now BYU Jerusalem faculty.) The Hebrew group spent a week immersed in language and work at Kibbutz Afiqim.
