During the Winter 1988 semester, David Galbraith was the director with professors Truman and Ann Madsen, S. Kent Brown, Monte Nyman, D. Kelly Ogden and Stephen Ricks. The students arrived within a month of the First Intifada (Palestinian uprising against the Israeli occupation), which began in December 1987. Due to unrest, students were not able to go as a group to Bethlehem or the West Bank but some went in smaller clusters. Excursions included a week in Egypt and the choice of either a week in Jordan (leaving passports at the border) or a week at a kibbutz harvesting bananas.
