A young Jewish boy by the name of Zeev Kaplan called the Center early in 2009, and said that all he wanted for his Bar Mitzvah was to play the organ at the BYU Center. We were given the assignment to contact his family and organize this event. Prior to Zeev’s performance, it was necessary to give him a series of lessons over several weeks to prepare him. Norman found that Zeev not only played, but he composed his own songs – some of which were captivating. He practiced and prepared. On the day of his Bar Mitzvah, his entire family and guests came to the Center for his program on an afternoon after the final tour of the day. It turned out very well. He played several numbers – including some of his own compositions. Norman also played several numbers to go along with his presentation. The entire family was most appreciative. His little grandmother attended – even though she was totally deaf – but she could feel the vibrations of the organ and was in tears at the end. We have since stayed in touch and are certain they will always remember Zeev’s special day.
