The BYU Jerusalem Center became a beacon for the entire Country by promoting Sunday Night Concerts involving world class musicians. People flocked to the center every Sunday evening for these concerts. Performers came from the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as guest artists from all over the world. For the most part, the auditorium was completely filled each Sunday, with a great demand for tickets which were distributed free of charge. Dorene worked with Neomi Weinstein with the Classical Concerts as well as the once-monthly Thursday night Jazz Concert. This involved preparation of programs (which included a bio for each performer) and ticket distribution for each concert. This was almost a full- time job.
Norman was privileged to be the announcer for the concerts. Both Norman and Dorene worked with Neomi in welcoming performers and guests. One assignment that was a bit nerve racking for Norman (because artists did not bring their own) was when he was asked at the last minute by the artists to be a page turner at the piano for the Sunday night concerts. The artists were very demanding and there was little or no time to be with them to go through the music to see if there were repeats, etc. Keep in mind that these were the best musicians in the world. “A time or two, I was frowned at or heard a bit of a ‘grunt’ when the page was not turned exactly on time.”For the most part, these were great opportunities to sit at the side of the performers and observe their marvelous talents.
