While I love the Garden Tomb, artistically speaking, I wanted to find a tomb to use as a reference for a painting that looked more untouched than what we find in the Garden Tomb. My hope was to paint it in a way that would draw the viewer into a scene that would feel more real, even if the reference was not in Jerusalem where Christ was actually buried. During a recent painting trip to Israel, we learned that there was one such tomb which still had the stone in front of it.
My friends and I found it, took photos and did some studies onsite to try to capture the light, color and feeling which can’t be seen or felt from photographs. I used my study and photographs from that day as references for this studio painting.
