1992 Fall

The Fall 1992 semester included 162 students-turned-life-long friends. Truman Madsen was the Director, and his wife, Ann, taught a popular course on Isaiah. Both of them were well-loved and admired. The Associate Director was Wayne Clark (wife, Colleen), and Academic Coordinator was Michael Bawden (wife, Pamela.) Outstanding faculty in Fall ’92 included religion professors Garth Allred (wife, Mary), George Masters (wife, Sharon), Monte Nyman (wife, Mary Ann), and George Pace (wife, “Sweetie” Diane). Jeff Chadwick (wife, Kim) was the resident “Indiana Jones” NES professor, with locals Nafez and Laila Nazzal as Islamic/Palestinian professors and Rabbi David Rosen as Jewish professor. Noel Reynolds (wife, Sydney) was a visiting research professor who helped facilitate the BYU partnership with Emmanuel Tov in the digitization of the Dead Sea scrolls during their year-long appointment. Many of their children attended as students during this semester (Kathleen, Joseph, David and Daniel.)

There were two newly married student couples during this semester: Glenn and Angela Christensen and Lorenzo and Melissa Pope. David Danielson was hospitalized after a fall while climbing on rocks in the Negev, but he recovered fully and ultimately married fellow student, Collette Williams, shortly after the semester. All’s well that ends well. Fall 92 alumni, Mike Madsen and Erin James, joined them among the Jerusalem Center’s match-making marriage legacy.

There was some ongoing political tension during Fall 1992, which resulted in a car bombing on the street below the Center, rock-throwing at a student bus following a visit to Jacob’s Well, and several periods of lockdown in the Center. The students remained safe and well throughout. This semester had the opportunity to visit Egypt twice, first to climb Mt. Sinai at the beginning of the term and then a memorable week spent in Cairo and Luxor at the end of the term. The Tabernacle Choir arrived for their historic Holy Land Tour only days after the students completed their semester and returned home.
