The Orson Hyde Memorial Garden

In the year 1841 Orson Hyde entered the Holy Land on an errand to dedicate the Holy Land to
the gathering of the Children of Israel. On October 24, 1841 he climbed the Mount of Olives
and offered the dedicatory prayer. The Orson Hyde Memorial Garden commemorates this visit.
Designed by Lepa Yahalom and Dan Tzur the gardens 5.5 acres sit peacefully on the hill with
paths to walk and places to sit, assemble, and contemplate. With a 150 seat-stone
amphitheater visitor can gather for devotionals or other similar activities. The views from the
Garden are vast and impressive as it overlooks the the Kidron Valley and then rises to Old City
of Jerusalem where the Dome of the Rock and the Golden Gate rest. It allows for a quieter

spot above the traditional Garden of Gethsemane, where the olive tress grow equally
impressive.
In keeping with the original date, the garden was inaugurated on October 24, 1979 by Spencer
W. Kimball, prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The
garden paths are open to all.
